Adult Basic Education (ABE)

This program provides instruction in reading, writing, language, and mathematics to adults who are not yet ready for high school level instruction. Students who score below the ninth grade on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) must be enrolled at least part of the time in ABE to improve their basic skills.

Students may exit this program upon demonstrating mastery of the basic skills at the ninth grade level. Adults may enter the ABE for personal development to improve their reading or math skills.

General Education Development (GED)

A student may earn the State of Florida High School diploma by successfully passing a national test called the General Education Development (GED) test. Students must be 16 years old with scores above the ninth grade level to be enrolled in GED.

The GED is a battery of five tests in the areas of writing, social studies, science, reading, and mathematics. Any candidate who is awarded an equivalency diploma shall be at least 17 years of age on the date of the examination, except in extraordinary circumstances, a candidate may take the examination after reaching the age of 16.

Family Literacy Programs

Adult and Family Literacy classes are grant-funded programs. The programs are located in several rural areas in Taylor County. The purpose of these programs is to assist adults to learn to read; to obtain knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency; to become partners in the educational development of their children; and to assist adults in the completion of a secondary education.

To be eligible for participation, adults must not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and they must have a school-age child or children living with them. Tuition, books, childcare, transportation, and GED examination fees are free to adults who qualify.
